On Marxist Criticism of Socialist Countries: Analysis

If the policies of a socialist state are not based on the material conditions of that very society, it will undoubtedly fail. This is, without question, crucial to the success of socialism.

Certain Marxists, predominantly Western Marxists and Trotskyites, claim that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), prior to the revisionist policies of Khrushchev, are/were “insufficiently socialist.”

This is an incorrect position that is undoubtedly harmful and ultimately serves the interests of the enemy.

When a socialist government successfully improves the material conditions of its people, such as in the case of China, which has brought over 800M out of poverty, the imperialist forces claim the government is “not socialist” but is instead a “capitalist society.”

This claim is used to give birth to another, that “socialism does not work” or that socialist countries are “backward societies,” despite history showing that these countries developed at rapid speeds due to these very socialist policies.

The successes of these policies are attributed to capitalism and repackaged as capitalist propaganda in a bid to extend the lifespan of Westerners’ belief in so-called “trickle-down economics.” It unquestionably prevents the Western masses from seeing alternative socioeconomic systems.

Stalin’s understanding of Marxism-Leninism differed from Mao Zedong Thought (MZT), which differed from Ho Chi Minh Thought.

These differences were necessary, as Marxism-Leninism is not an ideology to be followed blindly but one that must be adapted to each society’s specific material conditions.

This is in line with Chairman Mao’s criticism of book worship:

When we say that a directive of a higher organ of leadership is correct, that is not just because it comes from “a higher organ of leadership” but because its contents conform with both the objective and subjective circumstances of the struggle and meet its requirements.

It is quite wrong to take a formalistic attitude and blindly carry out directives without discussing and examining them in the light of actual conditions simply because they come from a higher organ.

It is the mischief done by this formalism which explains why the line and tactics of the Party do not take deeper root among the masses. To carry out a directive of a higher organ blindly, and seemingly without any disagreement, is not really to carry it out but is the most artful way of opposing or sabotaging it.

If the policies of a socialist state are not based on the material conditions of that very society, it will undoubtedly fail. This is, without question, crucial to the success of socialism. The material conditions of each society differ, so of course we need to study and act upon them carefully.

Socialism cannot be doctrinaire but tailored to each society’s material needs. This is required for its success.

Of course, self-criticism is important among Communists, but such critiques, ones that deny socialist states’ own character, reinforce the imperialists’ anti-socialist propaganda. The incorrect beliefs of these comrades should be rectified immediately to prevent harm.
